The Boston Strangler Serial Killer Essay Example For Students

The Boston Strangler Serial Killer Essay Word Count: 765 The Boston Strangler was probably the most notorious criminal that Boston, Massachusetts has ever known. But who was the Boston Strangler? Was he Albert DeSalvo, the person who confessed and went to jail for these crimes? Is he someone that took his secret to the grave and let an innocent man take the blame for his crime? Or is he still walking the streets of Boston, or even the streets of another city? We may never know for sure because based on all the evidence Ive read, in my opinion Albert DeSalvo was not the famed Boston Strangler. The Boston Strangler wreaked havoc on the city from June 1962 until January 1964. He claimed the lives of thirteen women, ages ranging from 85 years old to 19 years old. The first victim had been raped and her bathrobe tie wrapped around her neck in a bow in June 1964. We will write a custom essay on The Boston Strangler Serial Killer specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The next victim, was 85 year old Mary Mullen, she was not technically killed by the strangler, but rather a fatal heart attack when confronted by him. On June 30th, 1962, Helen Blake met death at the hands of the strangler. Next was 68 year old Nina Nichols. The fifth victim was 75 year old Ida Irga. On August 20th, 1962 Jane Sullivan had been raped and strangled with her nylons. The only black woman to be killed by the hands of the Boston Strangler was Sophie Clark. On December 30th, 1962, 23 year old Patricia Bissette was killed. Then 68 year old Mary Brown met her fate. In August 1963, Beverly Samans met the strangler, she was stabbed instead of strangled and was not raped, but the police still thought it was the stranglers work. The next victim was Evelyn Corbin . On November 11th 1963, Joann Graff was found raped and strangled in her apartment. But the Boston Strangler was getting sloppy, because he allowed himself to be seen. A man that lived upstairs from Joann reported to police a man had knocked on the door across the hall from his and inquired about Ms. Graff, when he told the man where she lived he quickly left, but not without being seen. The final murder occurred on January 4th 1964. The victim was Mary Sullivan. She was the youngest of the stranglers victims. Susan Kelly in The Boston Stranglers: The Public Conviction of Albert DeSalvo and the True Story of Eleven Shocking Murders makes a persuasive argument for DeSalvo being innocent of the strangling murders. She cites a number of reasons why she and others still believed that DeSalvo was innocent. One of the strongest of these reasons is that there was ;not one shred of physical evidence that connected him to any of the murders.; Nor could any eyewitness place him at or even near any of the crime scenes. Albert had a relatively memorable face, particularly because of his prominent, beak-like nose. The Strangler (or Stranglers, since some experts believe that it had to be at least two different murderers and possibly more) was seen by a number of eyewitnesses. One was Kenneth Rowe, the engineering student who lived on the floor above Joann Graffs apartment. He spoke to the stranger who was looking for her apartment just before she was killed. When Rowe was shown a photo of Albert DeSalvo, he did not recognize him as the man looking for Joann. Another point to make is serial killers tend to follow a pattern. The Boston strangler did not. He chose woman of all different ages and backgrounds, which leads me to believe that it was more than one person committing these crimes. No one can know for sure why DeSalvo would confess to crimes he didnt commit, but one reason could be money. .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .postImageUrl , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:hover , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:visited , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:active { border:0!important; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:active , .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u112d61e7fe825fcab377ce77a31358dc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Greenhouse Effect Essay Paper When Albert was conferring with his lawyer, he asked him if confessing could bring money to his family by ways of books and interviews. The Carol Ann Duffy Essay Example

The Carol Ann Duffy Essay Example The Carol Ann Duffy Paper The Carol Ann Duffy Paper Essay Topic: Carol ann Duffy Poems Carol Ann Duffy is a poet who characterizes her written poetry through carefully channelled dramatic monologues. Through her work, many themes and issues are explored, including that of loss, love, adolescence, change and being misplaced. Her propositions in this poetry are not to create a mystique or confusion, but to communicate through the usage of various personas and portray the thoughts and feelings typical to that character. In this essay, I will look at two specific poems: The Dolphins and Comprehensive. They both include elements of misplacement, which is arguably the key theme to both. I will analyze this theme in particular, exploring how Duffy creates the semblance of the character and the techniques that are employed in her poems. In The Dolphins, we are introduced to an enclosed persona of which freedom has been curtailed. The poem is spoken from the point of view of a dolphin, which has been incarcerated in an aquatic centre accompanied by others of its species. The second line claims We are in our element but we are not free, meaning the conditions in which they reside (obviously being water) are familiar, however, their habitat (the aquarium) does not allow the unrestraint found in an ocean, where they rightfully belong. There is a man and there are hoops confirms to the reader that the dolphins are being circus trained in order to satisfy audiences, further supported in the third verse with the line There is a coloured ball we have to balance till the man has disappeared. In reality, this tells us that dolphins have emotions too, that they would rather be placed back in the sea than spend the rest of their lives performing in front of people, and the man, who the dolphins monologue seems to attract an aspect of resentment toward. However, it may have taken the dolphins some time to initially identify their limited surroundings an idea revealed in the second verse: After travelling such space for days we began to translate is a sad twist of dramatic irony; people could see the marine mammals had been enclosed, yet it took themselves a while to realize that this was not an ocean, and that the space no longer stretched beyond horizons. To continue the irony, the last sentence of the first verse states that There is a constant flowing guilt, as the people working alongside the dolphins of the aquarium may feel conscious at withdrawing the freedom of such a creature, and flowing is used as a metaphor linking to the water in which they swim. This technique draws a defeated sympathy from the reader, as there is little they can do to set these dolphins free. The Dolphins ends with a devastating statement on behalf of the imprisoned There is a man and our mind knows we will die here. These dolphins will never have the God given privilege to roam the outside world again, and are resigned to becoming the focal point of public enjoyment. The poem, to a marginal degree, could also raise the argument of animal rights, depending on the interpretation of the person. The thought of staying in one place for such a long time for anyone would be highly constraining at the very least, and so to take a living being out of water for cheap entertainment provokes the question of whether such activity should even be legal. The poem explores the theme of misplacement through resigned emotion. The flexibility of freedom is valuable to the quality of life, and the dolphins persona seems to understand this very clearly. The beginning of the third verse mourns And now we are no longer blessed, for the world will not deepen to dream in, and conveys its regret that they will no longer do as they please, that they are no longer blessed. The pool in which they stay will not expand its depths for the dolphins to cover new ground, and the line also metaphorically suggests that their dreams of independence are over in these shallow depths. The poem also displays the loss of hope through means of repetition. There is is a common phrase which appears in the poem on several occasions (There is a constant flowing guilt, coloured ball, no hope, amongst others) and this augments the effectiveness of the dolphins monologue, as a picture of their lives become clearer; as does the sorrowful tone.

Sci/256 Week 2 Discussion Question

Identify a natural ecosystem in which you live or one near to where you live? How does this ecosystem support you? At what trophic level are you? Why? An ecosystem (2011), according to Merriam Webster Learners Dictionary, is everything that exists in a particular environment. An ecosystem includes living things, such as plants and animals, and things that are not living, such as rocks, soil, sunlight, and water. One such example of a natural ecosystem is the George Mitchell Nature Preserve in Creekside Village in the Woodlands, TX. Thewoodlandstx. com (2011) website illustrates that the George Mitchell Nature Preserve is part of the Montgomery County Spring Creek Greenway, which will connect and protect up to 12,000 acres of forest on both sides of Spring Creek. The Mitchell Preserve covers nearly 1,700 acres, and opened on October 19th, 2007. The natural ecosystem of this nature preserve can support humans in many ways. For example, the Spring Creek watershed currently contains tens of thousands of acres of bottomland hardwood forest and various edible plants. It also provides homes to wildlife, creates recreation opportunities such as hiking and biking trails, reducing flooding, and improving air quality (Montgomery County Precinct 3, 2011). Not to mention, the preserve increases real estate values and community pride, reduces pollution, and lowers air temperature. Second, wildlife in the nature preserve offers many to take the chance to bird watch. The forests along Spring Creek provide a crucial stopover point for migratory songbirds, where they can rest and refuel after crossing the Gulf of Mexico on their annual spring migration from Central and South America (Montgomery County Precinct 3, 2011). Many species of fish live in the lake year-round including catfish, crappie, and bass. White bass migrate through during springtime, and all are available for fishing. Last, the preserve offers an exceptional educational benefit. Several elementary, middle, and high schools have taken field trips learning about Spring Creek, the preserve, nature, and the benefits it has to offer to the public. A trophic level (2011) according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is a step in the nutritive series, or food chain, in the ecosystem. We as humans eat plants and animals, also considered omnivores. This in terms puts us at the third trophic level. However, several humans who are vegan would be considered second trophic level consumers because they eat only produce. Though it may sound simple, the food chains and food webs are often complex and difficult to analyze. The ecosystem is natural and living. As humans, we are as very much a part of the ecosystem as plants and animals, along with other organisms and bacteria. Although we expend plants and animals as third trophic level consumers and depend on them for survival, we must also take into consideration that the first, second, and fourth trophic level consumers also rely on the ecosystem for survival as well. Thus meaning ecosystems are essential for all life on earth. References Ecosystem. ( 2011). In Merriam Webster Learners Dictionary. Nursing as a Profession Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Nursing as a Profession - Research Paper Example provide further educational channels for them to practice their skills and abilities other than in schools and hospitals (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). Research by Weinberg, Cooney-Miner & Perloff, (2012) has indicated that nurses with higher education such as those with baccalaureate degree are able to get better patient outcome than those without the higher education. This is so because they exercise a higher degree in quality of care they provide as well as safety. They are also more empowered and skilled to handle the patients hence being able to attend to them faster and effectively which leads to increased patient outcome. With increased education in nursing, the nurse will have more leadership skills enabling provision of insights, research skills will be improved and hence can be able to carry out more research. The nurse will also be able to have the knowledge of the latest developments in nursing field including technology to aid in increasing patient outcome among many other skills (Huston, 2013). Film analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Film analysis - Essay Example 78. The movie focuses entirely on the narration of an incredible and observant soldier Paul Baumer. Paul is fast to portray and reveal the horrors that accompanied the trench wars that included gas attack, rat infestations, and fatal illnesses in the Western front. In addition, the film addresses and works on the goal of exploring the purpose and the destined purpose of the World War I. In the United States, the film remains as one of the most influential and popular educational tools in the education of concepts and unfolding events during the World War I. However, the film’s story line is in the perspective of the German that was among America’s enemies during the war. An American journalist by the name Henry Louis Mencken denoted the film as a classical and unquestionably among the best works regarding the World War. Since time immemorial, few films play the striking role of educating and delivering powerful anti-war messages in the American context and the world as a whole. Lewis Milestone’s extraordinary evocation in the film describes the tragic follies associated with the wars. Most reviews associate the film as the best movie as it displays and portrays innocent and determined German soldiers and their juxtaposed states in respect to the harrowing immediacy concerning the trench warfare. However, the soldiers fail at the expense of their tools and they fail to match the equipment of their enemies. In this light, the film displays a philosophical underpinning of the surging wars that leaves the audience in awe both in heart and mind. The youths are in the comfort of their class and in reference to the encouragement of their teacher they enlist for the inclusion in the army (Shmoop, 2010 Pg. 78). It is inconsiderate to think that the result is a good fight to in and this is contrary to the fact that there are no good fights and there is ultimately and always a winner. In addition, victory in most instances is similar to defeat. In the education of American history, this film serves a definitive role in ensuring that sometimes loyalty and patriotism is the source of death in the military men. In this context, the dialogue in the film in some cases expresses a sense of stagy and arch as compared to today’s standards. Paul watches helplessly as the world slowly crumbles them to their demise amidst all the madness, inescapable and indispensable loss as well as chaos in the trench wars. He recalls the butterflies he trapped as a young boy and put in glass cases. This reflective flashback serves as comparison to the current state he experienced in the trenches as he watched helplessly as their demise beckoning. With this summary, one may wonder why they should care in reference to the unfolding turn of events film affecting Paul and his comrades. The film provides a varied perspective regarding the events that unfolded during the World War in comparison to what the Americans allow. From the film, the audience h as the opportunity to hear and process the views of the German soldier that is a big enemy of the American nation as well the allied forces. This creates a sympathetic attitude towards the ‘enemy’ and this also induces reflective reasoning with the aim of defining the true

Major Differencies Between Eastern Essay Example for Free

Major Differencies Between Eastern Essay Western philosophy has its roots in Athens, Rome and Judeo Christianity while Eastern philosophy is derived from Confucianism, Taoism and Mahayana Buddhism. As Greek and Latin are to Western civilisation, so classical Chinese is to East Asian civilisation. I will focus on four major differences between Eastern and Western philosophies. 1. Western Individualism and Eastern Collectivism In the Greco? Roman tradition, the image of Prometheus powerfully illustrates the struggle for individual freedom. Prometheus had gone against Zeus, the all powerful god who ruled the sky from Mt. Olympus. Prometheus annoyed Zeus by creating human beings. To protect the human beings from Zeus, he stole fire from Hephaestos, the blackmith god and gave it to the human beings. This angered Zeus to the extent that Prometheus was chained to a rock and an eagle tore out his liver. In European consciousness, Prometheus had become the hero who: defied the patriarchy in the name of individual freedom, who brought light into our darkness. He was the saviour who sacrificed himself for the sake of mankind, the benefactor who brought the gift of technology down from heaven, the teacher who taught us that we are not at the whims of the gods any more, who showed us how to use our intelligence to take control of the world. The Christian tradition has also reinforced the notion of individual rights. The Bible speaks of God creating Man in His own image and letting him have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle and over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth (Genesis 1:26). By comparison, the Chinese live in a world of obligations: obligations to serve the ruler, obligations to work for the family, obligations to obey elders, obligations to help relatives, obligations to do well to glorify the name of ancestors, obligations to defend the country in times of trouble, and obligations to oneself to cultivate ones own virtue. It would also seem that rights only belong to one individual ? the Son of Heaven. Confucianism promotes conservatism and this stifles creativity and robs the people of self? introspection. 2. Fragmentary and Holistic According to Fritjof Capra, the emphasis of rational thought is epitomised in Descartes celebrated statement,Cognito, ergo sum ? I think, therefore, I exist. This has forcefully encouraged Westerners to equate their identity with their rational mind rather than with the whole organism. This division between the mind and the body has led to a view of the universe as a mechanical system consisting of separate objects, which in turn were reduced to fundamental building blocks whose properties and interactions were thought to completely determine all natural phenomena. This mechanistic conception of the whole world is still the basis of most of our sciences and continues to have a tremendous influence on our lives. Academic disciplines become fragmented and this has served as a rationale for treating the universe as if it consisted of separate parts to be exploited by different groups. The essence of the Eastern world view is the awareness of the unity and the mutual inter? relation of all things and events, the experience of all phenomena in the world as manifestation of a basic oneness. All things are seen as independent and inseparable parts of a cosmic whole, as different manifestations of the same ultimate reality. The Eastern traditions refer to this ultimate, indivisible reality as Brahman in Hinduism, Dharmakaya in Buddhism and Tao in Taoism. 3. Conflict and Harmony The Marxist view of history saw change as arising from a dialectic interplay of opposites ? hence class struggle and conflict. Western civilisation based itself on the struggle between the Good and Evil, God and Satan or Psyche and Cupid. Eastern philosophical thought is based on this notion of the Yin and the Yang. Frithjof Capra describes the Yang as the strong, male creative power associated with Heaven while yin is the dark, receptive, female and maternal element. The dark yin and the bright yang are arranged in a symmetrical manner. They are dynamic ? a rotating symmetry suggesting very forcefully a continuous cyclic movement. The two dots in the diagram symbolise the idea that each one of the forces reaches its extreme, it contains in itself the seed of the opposite. Life says Chuang Tzuis the blended harmony of the yin and the yang. Taoism permeates the economic and social lives of the Chinese through geomancy, qigong, Chinese medicine and idol worship. As Chan observes:Almost every hotel, office and commercial building that has gone up within the last decade adheres to certain principles of geomancy or Fengshui ? the art and science of harmonising man and nature. 4. Idealism and Pragmatism. The Western idea of democracy does not fit into the Eastern scheme of things easily. In an interview by the Daily Telegraph on 16 October 1989 the former Prime Minister remarked that: I think in a mainly Chinese electorate, the idea of a loyal opposition and an alternative government does not come easily. Youre either for or against the government. The Confucianistic idea of social hierarchy where a persons existence is relational, extending from his family, society and country. The pragmatism of the East is exemplied in the way Confucianism has been used to emphasize order through social hierarchy and the rules and conventions. Taoism provided the meaning of life and thus compliment Confucianism. Confucius preached the doctrine of the here and now. The emphasis is one of life and life and not life and death. The sage hoped to hear the right way in the morning, and die in the evening without regret. What lays the foundation of life for the Chinese is the family and the continuation of the family also means the passing on of experience, culture and thought. The Taoists has an equal view of life and death seeing life and death as the coming out and going back of a human form of existence. Chuang Tsu talks of coming and going . Lao Tzu said, out to life, in to death. The crux of the matter is to make the best of the present.

Reaction Kinetics Essay -- essays research papers

Reaction Kinetics: Rate of Reaction Of Tertiary-Butyl Bromide Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to find the order of t-BB graphically, to find the k (rate constant) at 0˚ C and at room temperature, also to find the Ea (activation energy). Principles: Several different chemical kinetic principles were used in this experiment. The reaction rates of this chemical equation were determined experimentally. This then allowed the reaction mechanisms (i.e. orders of each component, rate constant, etc.). These mechanisms were ultimately determined to be compiled to form a rate law. Rate = k[A]m[B]n   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Integrated rate laws are used to determine concentrations of reactants at certain times. However, these integrated equations can only be used after the experimental data is collected. Temperature has an effect on the rates of reactions. Swedish chemist, Svante Arrhenius, discovered that the rate constant of a reaction increased logarithmically in proportion to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. This is expressed mathematically as: k = Ae-ΔE/RT Method: 100 mL of water/ Isopropyl Alcohol were added to a 250 mL Earlenmeyer flask along with 15 drops of phenolphthalein. A buret was washed with soapy water and rinsed with 0.2 M NaOH. The buret was then filled to 0.00 mL. 2.00 mL of NaOH were added to the flask and it was placed into an ice-water bath.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  t-BB was injected into the flask by the lab assistant with this exact time being noted. The exact time was recorded once again when the solution became colorless.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  About two mL of NaOH were added to the solution and the time recorded when this became colorless. This was done until seven time readings were recorded. After the 7th addition of NaOH, the flask was removed from the ice bath and placed in a hot water bath for approximately ten minutes. The flask was then removed from the bath and cooled to room temperature. The solution was then titrated to a slight pink color. The volume reading of the burette was equal to the total base added during the experiment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This experiment was repeated in duplicate at room temperature. CH3  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   CH3 CH3 - C - Br + H2O  CH3 - C - OH CH3   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   CH3   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   T... ...found to be the 1/H graphs. This means that the reaction was a simple second order reaction. Rate Constant Calculations: A. (11.90-5.29)/(2687-160) = 2.62x10-3   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   B. (10.00-4.65)/(191-25) = 3.22x10-2 Activation Energy Calculation: ln(k2 – k1) = -(ΔE/8.314) (1/T2 – 1/T1)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Ea = -8.312 (lnK2 – lnK1) / (1/T2 – 1/T1)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   = -8.314 (ln 3.22x10-2 – ln 2.62x10-3) / (1/298.15 – 1273.15)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   = 67.3 KJ/mol Conclusion: This reaction was found to be simple second order. The rate constants were 2.62 x 10-3 at 0 degrees C, and 3.22 x 10-2 at room temperature. The activation energy was calculated to be 67.3 KJ/mol. There were no unusual problems encountered during this experiment. Error in data may be due to lack of ability to record times accurately.

2002 Salt Lake City Olympics

Section II: Case Study II – The Salt Lake Organising Committee: 2002 Olympics Our analysis of the case study had the following objectives: 1. To focus on the role of the new management in redesigning the organization to ensure successful execution of the 2002 Winter Olympics; 2. To identify the practices involved in the various stages of the project life cycle; 3. To discover how testing and validation reduce risk and uncertainty when planning a one-time event such as the Olympics. The bribery scandal and how it underpins the sequence of events The bribery scandal had a huge impact on the planning of the Olympics as the financial viability of the games depended on the involvement of various stakeholders and their reaction to the scandal could define the ultimate success of the event, for example: †¢The SLC Olympics were originally budgeted at $ 1. 55 billion, as $ 751 million was expected to materialize from sponsorships. At the time, this figure meant that SLOC would sign up sponsors far in excess of what had been done in prior Winter Games. In the wake of the scandal one delicate negotiation with health-care giant Johnson & Johnson was broken off followed by withdrawals from other sponsors. †¢After the scandal the federal government, which was meant to provide funds for transportation and security, pulled back; †¢The impact of the scandal on the general public should also be taken into consideration, as people would be expected to purchase tickets and turn the Games into a profitable business venture. After the scandal SLOC recognised the need to separate the tainted committee of the past from its future; therefore, Mitt Romney was brought in as CEO and Fraser Bullock as COO. The challenges were correctly identified right from the start of their appointment: $400 million budget deficit, knowledge gap, lack of relevant experience, dysfunctional organisation, staff operating in silos, inexperienced volunteer staff, no operational plan in plac e.Effective action plans were implemented in order to tackle the above challenges: tiered level of importance expense categorisation was introduced, new revenue generating areas were identified, people with significant international event experience were brought in and meld with those that had no such prior experience, the organisation was flattened to shorten the distance between Romney and Bullock and some key functional areas, staff was empowered by top management to come up with own solutions to challenges, an organisational culture was built up to give all staff the ense of common purpose. Hugely optimistic budget As a result of the scandal, the budget given to Romney when he joined SLOC reflected millions of revenue dollars unlikely to materialize. Due to the existing challenges, the financial strategy became the core project strategy. The objective of the new financial strategy was to restore confidence by creating a validated budget while keeping the books wide open. The ent ire system of managing the project is therefore, severely impacted by this strategy. Cash flow rules with support from the bottomIn order to cut unnecessary costs, Bullock categorized all expenses into what he called a â€Å"tired level of importance†. The classification took care of a lot of overheads automatically. Bullock also developed further Romney’s idea of identifying new revenue generating areas: sponsors were approached to fill in as many gaps in the budget as possible – for example, SLOC convinced Microsoft to develop and host the website as a sponsor. To secure the necessary cuts, Bullock realized he had to win the trust of Olympic staffers.Bullock made sure the staff knew the ‘lack of choice’ scenario behind the strategy of cost cuts, but more importantly he wanted his staff to feel comfortable with the cost cuts philosophy and incorporate it into their own decision making. He let the functional managers decide on their own lists of pri orities when suggesting cost cuts. In this sense, the focus of SLOC was to empower its management teams to come up with their own solutions to challenges rather than enforcing decisions using top-down authoritative approach.Restructuring the dysfunctional organization, bringing in experienced managers and building organizational culture Along with the assessment of the budget, Romney and Bullock reviewed the inherited organization and discovered a number of issues: †¢The organization was poorly structured as the staff operated in silos and some key functions were 2-3 steps away from Bullock and Romney, when they should have reported directly to one or both of them. The fix was to flatten the organization by elevating 18 positions to the managing director level, each responsible for overseeing several functions and venues and reporting directly to Romney and/or Bullock. †¢There was no transfer of knowledge between Games, although held regularly since 1896. The solution for t his was to bring in at least one person with prior Olympics experience to work in each functional department. This enabled the little formal knowledge transfer between Olympics †¢Most of the staff would consist of inexperienced volunteers who needed to be integrated with the few staff who had significant international event experience. As one of the managing directors elaborated – people with different job histories who cannot be promoted are doing the same job for a fixed period of time. What therefore sets the Olympics apart from a typical business is the lack of corporate culture, history, and future. To compensate for the lack of experience in running international events of enormous complexity like the Olympics, and to give all staff a common purpose, Romney developed a list of 5 core principles, which he and Bullock held as SLOC’s guiding principles and which they consistently communicated to all staff to give a sense of common purpose.Developing the operatio nal plan and switching to venue-based management Although the technical side of the project was on track (building the facilities for the Olympics), there was no operational plan in place as to how to run the venues during the game. Matt Lehman was hired as project manager responsible for the action plans. A year before the games the management process was changed from functional responsibility to venue responsibility, which meant that the operational plans could be tested and validated. Testing of Operational plansThe commitment to a defect-free Winter Olympics resulted in the testing of plans prior to the starting of the games, the following verification and validation approaches took place: venue testing, gaining insights into major customers’ experience reviews, operations simulations, test events, and dress rehearsals. Learning outcomes: The SLOC case study contains many DO’s with regard to project management and the role of the project leader. The new management had successfully turned an underbudgeted project into a profitable one. Leadership and the ability to delegate were very well performed by the COO Fraser Bullock and the CEO Mitt Romney. They managed to bring back sponsors and restored confidence within the organization. The success of the programme is based on the following factors: †¢Despite the lack of previous relevant experience, the Romney/Bullock tandem perfectly understood that results are delivered by people within a validated budget. †¢The right people were identified and hired. †¢By securing the budget, restructuring the organization, and empowering the staff to come up with their own solutions to daily challenges the tandem managed to balance the trade offs among cost, time, scope, quality and risks and deliver the Games. Both possessed the skill sets that allowed them to manage the processes and lead the staff by applying ‘technical’ and ‘adaptive’ approaches to solving project ch allenges. Issues were correctly identified right from the start; correct remedies were applied to tackle the issues rather than just the symptoms. †¢Bullock’s previous experience in turning money loosing companies into profitable businesses provided him with a set of skills quite relevant to his SLOC appointment. He had previously done the same financial makeover the Salt Lake City Games needed to other companies, providing him with the confidence that he could enter an unfamiliar industry and become conversant with it after a short assessment period. †¢Operational success was ensured by hiring a professional project manager (Matt Lehman) to overview the creation and execution of the operational plans. †¢Risks were identified and tested 6 months prior to the Olympics; the operational plans were tested, amended (if required), and validated. SLOC planned, executed and implemented the successful Salt Lake Winter Olympics through following the methodology of Concurr ent Engineering – an integrated approach which defines a project model, divides the project into major systems accordingly and delivers the project in a single phase. Each part or system is entrusted to a team consisting of experts. This approach helped to reduce project delivery times and costs despite increased uncertainties, ambiguities, and complexities that surrounded the project. My organization is a functional one and doesn’t have a dedicated project management team.Projects are managed within the existing functional hierarchy of the organization. Once management decides on a particular project, the different parts of the project are delegated to the respective functional units. The fact that project participants come from different functional backgrounds often makes projects difficult to co-ordinate and execute. For this reason projects are often viewed as an additional burden to which functional managers could be reluctant to allocate resources. Ultimately, st aff is not truly motivated to participate as projects are seen as something outside the scope of their usual responsibilities. The SLOC case study represents a good example of how to create a cohesive environment in which a cross-functional team could best use the creativity and capabilities it can provide. The case study shows that it is not enough just to manage a cross-functional team, it needs a true leader. On another hand, the case study provides an excellent example of how the project manager should be aware when to use the â€Å"project manager hat† versus the â€Å"technical specialist hat† as ultimately, the project manager should focus on their role as the leader and let the team handle their tasks according to their experience and expertise. The case study demonstrates how the project manager’s role on the outside should be building support and sponsorship from key stakeholders and building trust and creating an environment of open communication within the project team. Projects in my organisation would be more successful if these ideas are better incorporated in practice.

Men In The New Society

I was raised to believe that everything is created equal. This belief was suddenly changed when I entered college. People’s perception and opinion has in a way awakened me to the reality that our choices in life are sometimes affected by the inequalities set by our society. These inequalities have adversely influenced people’s choices and roles in life. These may sometimes come in a very subtle form of formal compliance to the expected responsibilities and roles that a person should assume in the society yet these are harsh forms of deprivation of individual’s decision and expression of one’s being. Society’ stereotyping of men and women’s role and responsibilities has created so much damage to people especially among men. In this new age where everything is fast changing and evolving, society should learn to view men and women equally and try to eradicate stereotyping in the system. Society should learn to be fair and equitable in its dealings between men and women. Both are human beings who have the right to live according to personal choices and preferences, rather than according to society’s unfair expectations and bias opinions. Men and women alike should be given equal opportunities to discover their purpose in life rather than force to assume traditional roles in the family, society and in the country. It is a reality that nowadays society still viewed women favorably than men. Women are afforded more tolerance and understanding while men are stiffly expected to do their roles with ease and comfort. This treatment is even reinforced because of greater advocacy to the protection of women’s rights rather than on the promotion of the equality of the two sexes. Studies have shown that feminist movement is more prevalent and supported than men movements. Indeed, society’s treatment between men and women created a huge distance between the two sexes that in effect encouraged men and women alike to strengthen movements purportedly for the purpose of asserting and protecting their respective rights in the society. Conflicts are then heightened rather than resolved. It is said that the most challenging and significant issue that men in the US face today is the oppression among men. This issue is anchored on the reality that society’s treatment to men sometimes partake the nature of oppression. Men are being unfairly deprived from opportunities to express real self. Most often they are pushed to assume roles like that of being the family’s provider, a responsibility that can be traced back traditionally. These norms of roles and responsibilities set by the society are seen as oppressive yet unrecognized by many. According to Schenk â€Å"men’s form of oppression have not been adequately defined, thus they are perceived to be non-existent†. Because of this, society continued to set the standard of behaviors and roles for men and dictate men’s actions and decisions. Since childhood, men are taught to be tough and strong. They are taught not to cry or to demonstrate emotions. Their minds are conditioned to be the provider of the family and the defender of the country. Should they fall short on these social expectations they are criticized, punished, rejected or harmed often throughout their lifetime for the effects of the social conditioning that has been put upon them. Also, men have been systematically trained to give up their beginning inherent, easy expectation of having relaxed attention from another when they are tense. The big boys don't cry principle even begins very early in a boy’s life unless his parents have made the effort that is needed to allow his emotional release process to be left intact. This mistreatment forces males to hide or defend their distresses, which sometimes makes the process of recovering one's inherent individuality and discovering one’s potential and capabilities much more challenging. Indeed social expectations are more difficult for men rather than women and society has not done significant actions to break this vicious and unfair cycle. Rather society allows the continued oppression against men by several institutions. Society’s institutions like the armed services, the courts, police and prisons, the drug and alcohol industries, the sports industry, and the work place has directly and indirectly hurt men. Whether society is aware of this is beyond comprehension as society’s only concern is for men to continue serving women and the society in the same old traditional system of thinking and behavior. Men are also falsely portrayed in the media. They are treated stereotypically and as less than human throughout society. Oftentimes they are projected as the violent sex and oppressive to women. This bad projection has created an indelible mark on the perception of many even to the young generation that makes it more difficult to break the vicious cycle of unrecognized oppression among men. Men in a way do get privilege from the way society sets up everyone with the roles they are in. But the privileges are real and material. It lacks substance and do not in a way satisfy the highest need of men which is to have positive self-esteem. It should be noted that the very best of being human is not material or material privilege, it is our human qualities to be close, to care for others, build many relationships of all kinds, to feel significant and to have positive self-concept. In these areas the lives of men are certainly not privileged and mostly not yet powerful. On the other hand, the extent to which men accept mistreatment and less-than-fully-human relationships is the extent that they not only accept their own oppression but also contribute to that oppression and pass the received oppression to other groups. The internalization of their own group's oppression is all that has been needed to maintain the oppressions of all other groups. When anyone gets tense and behaves in a less-than-fully-human way this behavior reinforces the stereotypes for all the people involved. The oppression of men affects all men. The challenge to face and help resolve the issues of oppression among men is so immense. At my stage now, I may not be able to even make a great contribution to these issues. However, my learnings to these issues in life of men and women would help me a lot in my decisions in life. According to Benett-Goleman, â€Å"life itself can be a teacher, presenting us with the chances to transmute the emotions brought up in us. When life disappoints us, it offers an opportunity to reach beyond ordinary conventions and understandings toward a greater perspective† (365). My awareness and understanding to these issues would then strengthen my resolve that I have to stand firm on my decisions and choices. I may not be able to make a significant effect in the society but at least I can make a difference starting from my own life sphere with the significant people in my life. At least I can break-free from this vicious paradigm of behavior. Reference List Benett-Goleman, Tara. Emotional Alchemy: How the Mind can Heal the Heart. New York: Three Rivers Press, 2001. Americas First Bioterrorism Attack essays

Americas First Bioterrorism Attack essays This is madness! Whats happened to the world? Is everyone gone insane? In a matter of way, this is what happens when you involve yourself in others business, like U.S. does all the freaking time. I dont know if there is one single war theyve missed, Im pretty sure theyve been in almost all the wars and conflict all over the world. I cant understand why they care to involve them self in all of these wars? Maybe they dont want to be left behind? I think this big conflict between America an Osama Bin Laden is in a way kind of childish. Especially this biological warfare they are having now. I really think its silly, and not to forget cowardly! Youre not a real man if you cant meet your enemy face-to-face! While the physical spread of anthrax has thus far proven fairly limited, the dissemination of its psychic by-product, fear, has been all too successful. In the U.S., a new round of threats continues to test the countrys nerves. Im glad Im not living in America right now. That cant be very fun right now, with all these threats hanging over their heads. The specter of the microscopic spores has sent hundreds of thousands rushing to their doctors offices and pharmacies, begging for prophylactic antibiotics. Thirteen people are now confirmed to have either been exposed to anthrax or to actually have the disease. Time, 16.10-01 ...

End of Year Academic Goal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

End of Year Academic Goal - Essay Example I have selected this goal because students are acquiring knowledge without key implementation, which is detrimental to their learning behavior. Working with children with special needs is different because it relies on different strategies to achieve the learning goals. Undoubtedly, patience and hard work are required. However, I strongly believe that students must be able to apply the theories and pedagogies they learned at school in real life. Children with special needs require more attention. Based on careful analysis, everyday conversational skills such as writing, reading, and collaboration can truly solidify the foundation of the student’s cognitive and linguistic skills. Thus, the goal would be to create customized programs for them so that their needs are accommodated. Strategies I firmly believe that implementing methodologies acquired at school initiates from giving students real life examples. As a student myself, I had a huge challenge acquiring and embedding thes e skills in actual life.
